Thankgiving Kids Friendly Craft~ Turkeys | Gather

A few days ago after trying to decide what to do as a Thanksgiving craft, since we have done the scrapbook paper turkeys in the past I came up with the idea of these guys:

?

?

I had purchased a bag of styrofoam balls just because when I was at the $ store a few weeks ago, didn't have a plan for them, but had to get them when I saw them.? Also had a bag of feathers I bought a couple months ago at the craft store just to have for kids crafts, it turned out perfect, because while in bed the other night thinking it occured to me exactly what I could do.? I also always have pipe cleaners on hand, and I mean always I have an entire big shoebox stuffed and overflowing with them, lol, although I was out of brown from our last project so we used glittery gold for this project.? Also used tiny red poms, and tiny google eyes which I already had.?

?

So I guess I should make a supply list:

styrofoam balls

brown paper/scrapbook paper

google eyes

tiny red poms

feathers

orange ribbon ( I used for the beak, and folded a very tiny piece over and then in half and glued on, but you can really use whatever you want to make the beak)

orange foam

pipe cleaners

?

glue, scissors, tooth picks

I also had more tiny and already brown glittery styrofoam balls, but you don't have to use these you can just add the eyes and everything to the body if you want.

?

So first we covered a baking sheet with foil, then I cut the scrabook paper into strips and dipped them in some water so they were damp.? Then I poured a bunch of elmers glue into a pie pan?I saved and we dipped the wet strips into the glue gently to try not to rip the paper, and you don't need a lot of glue just a small ammount is sufficient.

?

the balls:

balls with paper sitting to dry:

?

It takes a few hours for the glue to dry so in the meantime you can find other fun stuff to do, then once the glue is dry you can get out your feathers and pick which ones you want to add:

Then I took a toothpic and poked four holes in a line across the top of the ball.? I chose four because we only had one bag of feathers and needed enough to do all 8 of our turkeys since they are going to new homes of some of our family for Thanksgiving.?? You can do more or less if you like, I suggest at least the four though.

then you just gently push the feathers into the holes, I didn't use glue, but you could put a dab at each hole before sticking them in if you please

?

This next step is optional, if you have something else to use for the head.? Just add a toothpick shove it in add a little glue then leave enough for the small ball to go on, we glued these to make sure they would not fall off:

?

now that the head is on we glued on the eyes and? cut a slit going up and down on the head and stuck in the beak and below it?red pom to make the gobble?(or whatever it is called)

here is a side view to see how he looks:

?

Now for the last step, the legs I seem to have forgotten to take pictures, but I cut a slit in the middle of the bottom, folded a pipe cleaner in half and added some glue and then stuck the middle of the pipe cleaner into the hole.? I was using tacky glue, but then I decided to switch to hot glue to make it faster, just remember that hot glue, if it is too hot WILL melt the styrofoam a bit and so be careful when adding your glue.?
Then each of the halfs or legs I folded in half and we had a few precut and sticky foam stickers so we used those for some but also cut out matching pieces for the bottom and after folding and twisting the halfs together to make the legs sandwiched the ends in between the foam.? When I was out of those I just cut peices of foam out and instead of cutting out two separate pieces for each foot I folded the foam over to make the foot and left a small bit together at the back of the foot, that way I could slide it into the pipe cleaner to hold it in place and then I folded the foam back over and hot glued it to make sure it would stay together.

I had everything I needed for these already at home, but I am a craft addict and have tons and tons of craft supplies.? Nothing I used was expensive though, you can buy each item for only a dollar or two each.? My kids had a blast doing it too.? So I hope if you try this craft that you will too!?

Enjoy and HAPPY TURKEY DAY!!
