Can I Run Multiple Online Security Programs? | AVG (AU/NZ) Blog

Can I Run Multiple Online Security Programs? Can I Run Multiple Online Security Programs? Although many people believe that running more than one online security program increases their level of protection, the reality is that it can actually do more harm than good!

Why?

Running two antivirus programs can not only eat up your computer?s resources and cause system instability, but also affect the overall level of protection you receive.

When less is more?

Almost all security suites like AVG use a system or module that runs in real-time ? meaning they are constantly protecting you as you go about your online activities. Components like the AVG LinkScanner and AVG Resident Shield, included in both AVG Internet Security and AVG AntiVirus, are two components that work in this way.

Without these important functions, antivirus would simply become more of an on-demand scanner service,?only activated when manually selected to scan. If your antivirus program ran like this, there would be obvious security risks when browsing and downloading because your protection would not be automatically programmed to continue scanning at all times.

And this is where the conflict occurs between different antivirus products running?simultaneously. As separate programs scan and analyse files at the same time, conflicts can result and possibly leave the system unstable and open to threats.

What happens?

When two antivirus systems clash, they cause one another to become inactive. This means that neither one of the programs reach their optimum level of online protection.

Another side effect can be the computer performing in?unpredictable ways, such as crashing, slowing down, forcing false positives (each program may detect the other as a virus) and Internet connection issues.

How can I resolve this?

The most simple solution is to uninstall one of the antivirus programs. This will free up your computer?s resources and allow it to run normally again. Of course, if you?re using AVG Internet Security, you can be confident it has you fully covered!

However, if you do want to keep both programs, you can avoid conflicts by setting one of the programs to ?on-demand mode?. This will prevent the real-time scanners from clashing but still allow you to perform a thorough scan when you want to.
