WR has 'heard' of Viagra use to gain edge on field

CHICAGO (AP) ? The idea that NFL players might use Viagra to gain an edge on the field left Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs practically in tears ? from laughing.

He wasn't the only one.

Players cracked jokes about it Thursday, a day after Bears star receiver Brandon Marshall said he had heard that some players were using Viagra and hoping it would give them an advantage during games. Punch lines aside, experts say it's unlikely the erectile-dysfunction drug would help.

"What would that do? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard," Minnesota Vikings long snapper Cullen Loeffler said.

Bears defensive back D.J. Moore wondered if Marshall was kidding and said: "I've never heard of that."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Viagra is not a banned substance and declined further comment.

Marshall started it all Wednesday when asked about a growing number of suspensions tied to amphetamines, including the ADHD drug Adderall. He said he didn't know much about Adderall, but suggested Viagra could be viewed by players as a way to boost their energy.

"I know guys, it's such a competitive league, and guys try anything just to get that edge," he said. "I've heard of guys using Viagra, seriously, because the blood, it's supposed to thin. . I don't know. Some crazy stuff. It's kind of scary with some of these chemicals that are in some of these things, so you have to be careful."

But using Viagra for more touchdowns and tackles?

"I didn't even know people could do that," New York Giants tight end Martellus Bennett said. And his teammate Justin Tuck added: "I can't imagine why people would take steroids, so I have no comment on Viagra. Besides, my wife would be very upset with me."

Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday, a 15-year NFL veteran, said some of his teammates were talking about Marshall's Viagra remarks but he had never heard of such a thing himself.

"I don't understand what good it would do," he said.

Dr. Olivier Rabin, science director at the World Anti-Doping Agency in Montreal, said it is unlikely Viagra does anything to improve football performance in NFL players. He also said there is no evidence the drug might somehow mask the use of steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs.

Rabin noted that research in high altitudes found the drug helped improve oxygen flow in climbers with impaired lung function. That's because Viagra can dilate blood vessels, and vessels in the lung constrict in high altitudes.

Research involving cyclists at high altitudes found similar benefits, but Rabin said studies have shown the drug has no effect on athletic performance at sea level.

University of Miami researcher Kevin Jacobs has studied Viagra in simulated high-altitude environments and "didn't find much benefit in young, healthy, active individuals."

"No one has really tested it in football players doing exercise. Whatever benefit they think they're getting is probably more psychological than anything," said Jacobs, an associate professor in the kinesiology and sport sciences department.

Marshall said he doesn't take medication "of any sort" and noted that the NFL's drug policy is strict.

"Any time you take anything over the counter, if you don't approve it with your training room, you can get popped," he said. "Some of it's fair, but some of it kind of puts you in a tough spot as a professional athlete. Because the only thing you'll see is getting busted for PEDs, but it could be something over the counter for a little sickness. You just have to be on top of your Ps and Qs."

Mercury discovery boosts alien life search

The discovery of huge amounts of water ice and possible organic compounds on the heat-blasted planet Mercury suggests that the raw materials necessary for life as we know it may be common throughout the solar system, researchers say.

Mercury likely harbors between 100 billion and 1 trillion metric tons of water ice in permanently shadowed areas near its poles, scientists analyzing data from NASA's Messenger spacecraft announced Thursday.

Life on sun-scorched Mercury remains an extreme longshot, the researchers stressed, but the new results should still put a spring in the step of astrobiologists around the world.

"The more we examine the solar system, the more we realize it's a soggy place," Jim Green, the director of NASA's Planetary Science Division, said during a press conference Friday.

"And that's really quite exciting, because that means the amount of water that we have here on Earth ? that was not only inherent when it was originally formed but probably brought here ? that water and other volatiles were brought to many other places in the solar system," Green added. "So it really bodes well for us to continue on the exploration, following the water and its signs throughout the solar system." [Latest Mercury Photos from Messenger]

Organics, too?
The observations by Messenger, which has been orbiting Mercury since March 2011, provide compelling evidence that reflective patches first spotted near the planet's poles by the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico two decades ago are indeed water ice, researchers said.

In the coldest parts of Mercury ? permanently shadowed regions where temperatures drop to perhaps minus 370 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 223 degrees Celsius) ? this ice can lie bare and exposed. But Messenger's data also show that much more frozen water is found in slightly warmer areas, buried beneath a strange dark material that acts as an insulator.

This dark stuff is likely a mixture of complex organic compounds, the carbon-containing building blocks of life as we know it, researchers said during Thursday's news conference.

"This organic material may be the same type of organic material that ultimately gave rise to life on Earth," said Messenger participating scientist David Paige of UCLA.

Helping scientists read the book of life
Mercury probably acquired much of its water and organic material the same way Earth did, researchers said ? via comet impacts and asteroid strikes. Ice and organics are common on the frigid bodies in the solar system's outer reaches.

"There's a lot of water out there, as there is a lot of water around other stars, but at substantial distance," said Messenger principal investigator Sean Solomon of Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

With its ultra-thin atmosphere and proximity to the sun, Mercury is probably not a good bet to host life as we know it. But finding ice and organics there should still inform the hunt for organisms beyond Earth and aid scientists' quest to learn more about how life took root on our planet.

"The history of life begins with the delivery to some home object of water and of the building blocks, the organic building blocks, that must undergo some kind of chemistry, which we still don't understand on our own planet," Solomon said.

"And so Mercury is becoming an object of astrobiological interest, where it wasn't much of one before," Solomon added. "That's not say to say that we expect to find any lifeforms ? I don't think anybody on this table does ? but in terms of the book of life, there are some early chapters, and Mercury may indeed inform us about what's in those chapters."

Dogs in Florence ? Flo'N The Go

By Margaret Suren (Kent State University)

Dogs have been man?s best friend since the cavemen. They used them to hunt and protect themselves. Now we keep pets to keep ourselves company. Few people in the world still use dogs to their breeding use, some have even gotten twisted. Of that few, the dogs are used for such as agility and beauty competitions.? Bottom line is that we love our dogs. Big, small, pretty, and ugly, the dog as become part of the family. But is there a difference between the American family dog and the Italian?

Based off of my observations of living in Florence, Italy for almost three months now, I?ve notice that the canine pet is more welcomed every where.? If someone was walking their dog down the street and wanted to grab a caffe, they didn?t have to tie their dog outside to go in. On more than one occasion I?ve walked into a store and found a small dog sleeping behind the counter.? On my way to school, I pass a jewelry shop and every morning there is a small black dog watching me as I walk by.

I have only seen a few shops with the sign posted on the door that reads ?No Dogs Allowed,? but I feel like they only appear on the big name shops like Coin and H&M or at grocery stores where an obvious health risk is present.

In America there are few stores that let you take a dog inside and those are 95% pet shops. Every where you see the symbol of ?No Pets Allowed.?? They even have restrictions on what type of pet you can have in your own house.? In my home town, anything over 100 pounds or a bull terrier such as a pit bull, was against the law of the city.

This isn?t to apply that the American people don?t love there dogs. In fact the American dream is probably 2.5 kids and a pet dog with a white picket fenced in yard.? We have multiple of animal organizations, some just dedicated to saving dogs from abusive owners. Some are for rescuing certain breeds from over breeding or extinction. Further investigation is needed to learn about what kind of rescue organizations Italy has.

Also before moving here, I was expecting to see only a certain kind of dog breed.? I thought Italians might only have the small, lap dogs like Italian Greyhounds or Yorkshire terriers. But I have seen a wide variety of them. I have seen the small ones but I have also seen dogs as big as Labradors. In Venice I saw two Birmese Mountain dogs.? Big sized dogs were not what I assumed I might see here in Florence but by observing the community I soon learned that it was just a misconception.

It might be just a culture shock for me because I?ve always lived in a small town. Moving to Florence, I knew I was going to see different things but I wasn?t expecting to see any pet differences.? My observations could also be wrong, maybe it is the same here in Italy as it is in America. Maybe if I had visited a big city such as New York, I would?ve seen similar behavior.

Growing up, I?ve never been without a dog. Even when I went to college I saw my two every other weekend. Since moving here, it has been the longest I?ve ever gone without some sort of pet. When I plan for the future,? I always add in a dog because I automatically assume I?ll have one. It has become such a norm for me to be with one that I will FaceTime my mother just so I can say hi to my puppies. I might miss them more than my actual family.? I am soon learning that man?s best friend is celebrated and loved? everywhere.

Syria launches air strikes as combat rages in Damascus

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian war planes attacked towns in the country's north and east and killed at least five civilians in a strike on an olive oil press as fighting raged in the capital Damascus on Tuesday, opposition activists said.

The latest fighting follows recent battlefield gains by the rebels in their struggle to topple President Bashar al-Assad, but it is far from clear if a strategic breakthrough is likely.

More than 90 people were killed on Tuesday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based group.

Rebels trying to make inroads into the capital battled government forces in the suburb of Kfar Souseh on the edge of the centre of the capital, activists said.

In Aleppo province in the north, rebels shot down a military helicopter, according to video footage posted on YouTube that showed what appeared to be a missile hitting the aircraft.

Security sources and activists have reported a small but growing number of heat-seeking anti-aircraft missiles entering Syria, weapons the rebels would need to stand any chance of overcoming Assad's increasing reliance on air power.

The video could be one of the first clear indications that such weapons are in use. The Local Coordinating Committee opposition group said the Free Syrian Army had downed the helicopter near the Sheikh Suleiman army base, 30 km (20 miles) northwest of the contested city of Aleppo.

More than 40,000 people have been killed in the uprising, activists said. What began as a series of peaceful protests against four decades of Assad family rule in March last year grew into a bitter civil war with sectarian overtones.

U.N. Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Robert Serry, told the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday that around 450,000 are now believed to have fled Syria, with even more displaced inside the country.

"Destruction, death and suffering have become part of daily life across Syria," Serry said. "The humanitarian crisis is becoming more acute with the winter upon us and the number of those in need growing, potentially reaching 4 million inside Syria by the end of 2012."

International Syria mediator Lakhdar Brahimi is due to brief the 15-member council on Thursday and the U.N. General Assembly on Friday. There is diplomatic deadlock between Western powers, who broadly support the opposition and Assad's supporters Russia and China which have blocked Security Council action.

CAR BLASTS AND BARREL BOMBS

Syrian state television said that two people were killed and four wounded in a "terrorist suicide car bomb" in Artouz, near Damascus. The Observatory said the explosion was caused by a car bomb next to a military police checkpoint.

Near the Old City in Damascus, a car bomb killed one person and blew the legs off another man, according to opposition activist Samir al-Shami. He said it was unclear if the car, a white Toyota, was rigged by Assad loyalists or rebels.

In northern Idlib province, a government jet dropped barrel bombs - cylinders packed with explosives and petrol - at the Abu Hilal olive oil press, 2 km (1.2 miles) west of Idlib city, activist Tareq Abdelhaq said.

At least five people were killed and five wounded in the attack, according to the Observatory. Abdelhaq placed the number much higher, citing locals saying that at least 20 were killed and 50 wounded.

Activists said the victims were civilians waiting to press their olives for oil, but they said opposition fighters were in the area. It was unclear if there were any rebel targets nearby.

Combat also took place in the Baba Amr district of Homs city, an area that was overrun by government troops in February, as well as in Aleppo, Deir al-Zor, Deraa, Idlib province and Hama province, the Observatory said.

AIR STRIKES

Rebels have captured at least five army and air force installations in the past 10 days, putting pressure on Assad's forces in Aleppo and Idlib and the eastern oil region of Deir al-Zor.

The opposition are calling for international military aid, particularly against air attacks, but Western powers who support the uprising are wary of radical Islamist units among the rebels. However, some anti-aircraft equipment has been seized from captured army bases.

The government also launched air strikes on Deir al-Zor city and on the strategic town of Maraat al-Numan in Idlib province on Tuesday.

The rebel takeover of Maarat al-Numan last month effectively cut the main north-south highway, a route for Assad to move troops from the Damascus to Aleppo, Syria's largest city where rebels have taken a foothold.

Most foreign powers have condemned Assad, and Britain, France and Gulf countries have recognized an umbrella opposition group, the Syrian National Coalition, as the sole representative of the Syrian people.

But Assad has been able to rely on his allies, especially regional powerhouse Iran, which is believed to be bankrolling him and supplying military support despite U.S. and European sanctions. Russia, its main arms supplier, says it has only sent weapons already agreed to in previous deals.

Nonprofit news website ProPublica reported on Monday that Russia sent 240 metric tons of bank notes to Damascus this summer. U.S. and European sanctions include a ban on minting Syrian banknotes.

Automakers gear up for a green holiday season

5 hrs.

If the upcoming L.A. Auto Show is any indication, American motorists are in for a green holiday season.

A preliminary estimate shows as many as 50 new cars, trucks and crossovers will make their debut during the annual event, the first big U.S. auto show of the 2013 model?year.?

A sizable chunk of those new models will be battery-based, including everything from conventional hybrids to pure battery-electric vehicles. But the L.A.?show also will point out how even conventional gasoline powertrain technology continues to become more and more environmentally friendly.

Among the most significant debuts already announced for Los Angeles, Honda will introduce its first plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle, the Accord PHEV.??

Ford will offer a pair of its own plug-ins, the Fusion Energi sedan and the C-Max Energi ?people-mover.???

The list of pure battery-electric vehicles, or BEVs, will include the new Fiat 500e and the Chevrolet Spark EV, General Motors first fully electrified model since it pulled the EV1 from production just before the turn of the new Millennium.

During a recent two-day media background session, GM revealed some ambitious plans for its electrification program ? which began with the December 2010 launch of the Chevrolet Volt plug-in and which will soon add both the Spark EV and the upcoming Cadillac ELR plug-in. In all, the maker hopes to sell 500,000 battery-based vehicles between now and 2017.

?Plug-based solutions will play a significant role in our technology portfolio going forward,? said global product development chief Mary Barra.

Nissan may be even more ambitious.? Before the end of the decade, it intends to be selling as many as 500,000 battery-based vehicles annually, with products including the planned Infiniti LE battery-electric vehicle set to join the Nissan Leaf it launched about the same time the Chevy Volt hit showrooms.

For its part, the Fusion and C-Max Energi plug-ins will be part of a wave of eight advanced battery vehicles Ford plans to launch within the next couple years, according to Ken Czubay, the maker?s vice president of U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service.

But not everyone is quite so upbeat. Though he will try to wear a smile during the debut of the 500e, Fiat/Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has dubbed battery cars ?economic lemons,? a reference to the reality that the underlying technology is so expensive manufacturers have to absorb a significant portion of the price tag in order to win over consumers.??

By some estimates, the current crop of BEVs and PHEVs cost at least $10,000 more to produce than they are selling for ??before a buyer works in the available federal and state tax credits.

And even then, a new study by J.D. Power and Associates warns that, ?Electric vehicles will remain a very small part of the U.S. market unless automakers can lower prices and demonstrate the economic benefits to consumers.?

No wonder the brand new Honda Fit EV and Toyota RAV4-EV models that will be displayed in L.A. will only be sold at a limited number of California dealerships for at least the next few years.? Critics deride those offerings as ?compliance cars,? built only to satisfy strict zero-emission vehicle, or ZEV, mandates enacted by the demanding California Air Resources Board.

?No one wants to be locked out of the California market,? acknowledges John Mendel, the top American executive at Honda, one of the major makers required to meet the ZEV rules.

Ironically, the L.A.?Auto Show will, yet again, give skeptics the opportunity to promote alternatives to battery power.? The new Dodge Dart Aero model approaches the fuel-efficiency of comparably sized hybrids, note the organizers of the annual Green Car of the Year Award which is announced during the media days at the LA show.

The new Mazda CX-5 SkyActiv crossover will also be in contention, another model that relies on the latest breakthroughs in conventional gas power.?

And the Ford Fusion was named a finalist as much for its advanced, gas-powered EcoBoost engine as for its hybrid and plug-in hybrid options. Only the new Toyota Prius C and Ford C-Max models, among the five finalists, are exclusively battery-based.

The Green Car of the Year Award has notably honored diesels on several occasions. And past winner Audi will bring four new diesels to the LA Auto Show this year, including high-mileage versions of its A6, A7, A8 and Q5 models. Set to start rolling out next year, they?re expected to deliver hybrid-like fuel economy ?but without sacrificing performance,? proclaims Audi of America President Scott Keogh.

While Californians may like to think of their state as the greenest in the country, the reality is that they still appreciate muscle. According to Mercedes-Benz, a full 25 percent of all the maker?s high-performance AMG models are sold in Southern California.

So, no surprise that among the several debuts planned by the German maker it will reveal the fastest production car it has ever built, the 622-horsepower SLS AMG Black Series. (For the moment, Mercedes has not yet committed to bringing a battery-powered version of the 2-seater, the SLS E-Cell, to the U.S. market.)

Bentley, Jaguar and Porsche will also reveal new high-performance products at the LA Convention Center. But these days, one can be mean and green. Or, at least, greener. The new Porsche Carrera 4S will get a big bump in horsepower ? even while delivering about 15% better fuel economy than the outgoing model.

And BMW will bring to LA a version of its upcoming i8 plug-in, the first in a new line of sporty, battery-based vehicles that will also include the i3 battery-electric city car.

The LA Auto Show has a tradition of focusing on green technology.? But California itself has a history of setting the trends that eventually sweep across the rest of America. So what you see at the Los Angeles Convention Center later this month is likely to influence what you drive wherever you live in the years ahead.?

Different ?Schools? of Ethics | Business Ethics, Culture and ...

In an earlier life, I taught business ethics. (Most of my undergraduate college credits are in philosophy.) So here?s a very concise overview of the major ?school?s of ethics that are often taught in business ethics programs.

Immanuel Kant?s Categorical Imperative (1700s)

Kant asserted that a belief is an ethical principle if, and only if, it applies with everyone all the time everywhere, that is, if the principle should be a universal law. Thus, the Golden Rule might qualify as an ethical principle.

John Stuart Mill?s Utilitarianism (1800s)

Mill asserted that a belief is an ethical principle if it results in the greatest good for the most people. Thus, some people might belief that an economic strategy to ?spread the wealth? is also a highly ethical strategy.

Joseph Fletcher?s Situational Ethics (1900s)

Fletcher also asserted that a moral law depends on the current situation. However, he also asserted a principle should be a moral law only if it contributed to love. Thus, Fletcher?s assertion might have contributed to ? or justified ? the ?free love? movement in the 1960s.

Of course, these descriptions are overly simplistic for the purpose of contrasting the different major ?schools? of ethics.

What do you think?

Are there other ?schools??

What beliefs or strategies fall into which school?

New Jersey gay conversion therapy group sued for fraud

(Reuters) - Four gay men who underwent treatment designed to change their sexual orientation filed a lawsuit in New Jersey on Tuesday accusing their therapists of fraud, in what may be the first suit of its kind against conversion therapists.

Jews Offering New Alternatives for Healing (JONAH), a Jersey City-based non-profit organization, falsely claimed to be able to eliminate the four men's homosexual desires through a scientifically proven process, according to a complaint filed in the Superior Court of New Jersey.

JONAH clients would pay a minimum of $100 for weekly individual counseling sessions and another $60 for group therapy sessions.

The plaintiffs charge that during therapy sessions they were sometimes ordered to remove all of their clothing; in other sessions they were told to beat effigies of their mothers with tennis rackets or were subjected to homosexual slurs, according to the complaint.

Another JONAH client was instructed to break through a human barricade to retrieve a pair of oranges, drink the juice from them and place them down his pants to symbolize the recovery of his testicles and, by extension, his heterosexuality, according to Michael Ferguson, one of the plaintiffs.

The so-called conversion therapy that JONAH practices is "unconscionable and a sham" and a violation of New Jersey's consumer protection laws, said Sam Wolfe, a staff attorney at the Southern Poverty Law Center, one of the groups representing the plaintiffs, at a press conference on Tuesday.

JONAH founder Arthur Goldberg and JONAH-affiliated counselor Alan Downing, each of whom were also named in the suit, did not return calls requesting comment.

Since it began operations over a decade ago, JONAH has provided its conversion therapy to thousands of clients, according Christine P. Sun of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Despite its name, JONAH is not a religious-based organization, though it does target Orthodox communities in New York and advertises in Jewish publications, Chaim Levin, one of the plaintiffs, told reporters.

Professional groups that have been highly critical of conversion therapy include the American Medical Association, the World Health Organization and other peer organizations, the complaint says. The notion that an individual's sexual orientation can be changed has been rejected by the American Psychiatric Association, the complaint adds.

States are beginning to take action against providers of conversion therapy. California outlawed the practice for minors in October, and a New Jersey state assemblyman has introduced a bill that would do the same for his state.

The amount of damages the plaintiffs are seeking was not specified but includes the costs of JONAH therapy sessions, the costs of mental health services to address alleged damages from JONAH's treatments and attorneys' fees. They are also seeking the revocation of JONAH's business license.

Australia Military Sex Abuse:Australian goverment apologises from military personnel / Australia News

Defence Minister Stephen Smith made the apology in Parliament on behalf of the government following hundreds of claims of rape and sexual assault from members of the armed forces, past and present.

An inquiry into the allegations ? which span six decades ? has also begun and a compensation fund set up.

Mr Smith said: ?Young men and women have suffered treatment which no member of our defence force or our community generally should experience.?

The apology is the latest step in a two-year effort to reform the culture of the Australian military and make it more accepting of women.

The minister added: ?Young men and women have endured sexual, physical or mental abuse from their colleagues which are not acceptable and do not reflect the values of a modern, diverse, tolerant, Australian society.?

He acknowledged claims that officers had abused their positions of trust through their own behaviour or by turning a blind eye to the actions of others.

Mr Smith also announced that retired judge Len Roberts-Smith had been appointed to examine allegations of abuse from more than 1,000 people dating back to the 1950s.

The earliest case relates to the alleged abuse of a 13-year-old navy trainee in 1951, while the most recent relates to events in 2011.

A preliminary review of these allegations by a law firm found that 750 were ?plausible,? Mr Smith said.

The three-month inquiry could result in compensation of up to 50,000 Australian dollars (?33,000) for each victim and the alleged perpetrators being referred to criminal authorities for prosecution.

Mr Smith warned that some of the perpetrators could still be serving in the military.

Australian Defence Force (ADF) Chief Lieutenant General David Hurley also apologised to victims and pledged to cooperate with the inquiry.

He said: ?The number, nature, and range of allegations demonstrates that some members of the ADF have failed to understand the responsibility that rank imposes; that rank is a privilege and not a licence for domineering, belittling or predatory behaviour.?

The government began its inquiries last year after a young woman alleged that a fellow cadet had secretly filmed a sexual encounter between the pair and broadcast it to their colleagues at the Australian military officer training academy.

That, and the attention the government focused on it, provoked a flurry of complaints of sexual misconduct over the decades.

GOP blocks bill to give hunters more land access

(AP) ? A wide-ranging bill to give hunters and fishermen more access to public lands stalled in the Senate Monday after Republicans said it spends too much money.

Republicans supported opening lands for outdoorsmen and many other provisions in the bill sponsored by Democratic Sen. Jon Tester, but GOP senators blocked the legislation on principle Monday evening in a mostly party-line procedural vote after Senate Budget Committee's top Republican, Jeff Sessions of Alabama, objected to spending on conservation programs included in the bill.

The sportsmen's bill would increase land access and allow hunters to bring home as trophies 41 polar bears killed in Canada before the government started protecting polar bears as a threatened species. The legislation would also exclude ammunition and tackle from federal environmental laws that regulate lead, allow bow hunters to cross federal land where hunting isn't allowed, encourage federal land agencies to help states maintain shooting ranges, boost fish populations and protect animal habitat.

Sessions said he supported the overall bill but objected to spending on conservation programs that he said violated budget rules. Democrats argued that the bill also raised money for those provisions.

The bill also faced some objections from environmental groups over the polar bear imports and exclusions from lead standards.

The lead provision threatens public health and the measures "could set back wildlife conservation efforts," said California Sen. Barbara Boxer, the Democratic chairwoman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, while acknowledging she supported other provisions in the bill. Boxer was the only Democrat to vote against moving the bill forward Monday.

Ammunition and tackle that contain lead are now unregulated under federal toxic substance laws, and the EPA has so far declined to regulate them. The bill would make it law that the Environmental Protection Agency could not regulate ammunition and tackle, leaving those decisions to states. Environmental groups opposing the exemption say that birds on land and water are killed by lead poisoning after eating the spent ammunition and fishing tackle.

The polar bear provision would allow the hunters ? two from Tester's home state of Montana ? who killed polar bears in Canada just before a 2008 ban on polar bear trophy imports took effect ? to bring the bears' bodies across the border. The hunters involved were not able to bring the trophies home before the Fish and Wildlife Service listed them as a threatened species.

Some animal welfare groups, including of The Humane Society of the United States, say that allowing the polar bears bodies across the border could set a bad precedent and embolden other hunters to try and circumvent threatened or endangered species laws.

Capital Sports ? Life support decision divides Camacho family

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, November 24- The mother of Hector ?Macho? Camacho, the Puerto Rican ring great declared brain dead after being shot, said he will be taken off life support, a move the ex-champion?s eldest son opposes.

Camacho?s mother, Maria Matias, said in a press conference that she has accepted the doctors? verdict rendered Thursday that the three-time world champion was clinically brain-dead and could not recover.

She said the family would wait until Saturday, so that all of Camacho?s children will have a chance to say goodbye.

But Camacho?s eldest son, Hector Camacho jnr, insisted Friday night that ?the fight is not over until the final round,? and that he believed Camacho should stay connected to the respirator keeping him alive.

?Doctors make mistakes. Men make mistakes. God does not make mistakes,? Camacho jnr said after visiting his father again at Centro Medico hospital in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. ?He is a fighter and the fight will continue until the end.?

However, Camacho jnr acknowledged that the final decision would belong to Matias ? ?my grandmother, the woman who gave birth to my papa.?

Flanked by friends and family members, Matias told reporters that on Saturday she would do the only thing left she could do for her son.

?I lost my son three days ago,? she said in a firm and determined voice.

?He?s alive only because of a machine. My son is not alive. My son is only alive for the people who love him.?

She said that she had been told by one friend who had visited Camacho in hospital that he remained alive, that his legs had moved.

?But in reality, it?s electricity,? she said. ?The reality is that my son has gone.?

Dr Ernesto Torres said Thursday morning that Camacho showed no sign of brain activity.

The 50-year-old ex-fighter was shot on Tuesday while in a car in San Juan outside a liquor store. The boxer?s driver, Alberto Mojica Moreno, 49, was killed in the shooting.

It was not immediately clear if they were deliberately targeted or simply caught up in a random act of violence. The bullet damaged three arteries in Camacho?s neck, crippling the flow of blood to his brain.

Camacho was one of the most colorful boxers of the 1980s, winning world titles at super lightweight, lightweight and light welterweight.

With a career record of 79-6-3 with 38 knockouts, he took on all comers, including big names Oscar De La Hoya, Julio Cesar Chavez, Sugar Ray Leonard, Felix Trinidad, Ray Mancini and Greg Haugen.

But battles with drugs and alcohol led to numerous brushes with the law outside the ring.

Earlier this year, US police charged him with child abuse for allegedly slamming his son into a floor at his ex-wife?s home in Florida.

Ismael Leandry, a friend and former manager and a key figure in Camacho?s ring career, told AFP that Puerto Rico?s secretary of recreation and sport, Henry Neumann, along with the boxing commission, were already preparing a tribute to the fighter.

While a public funeral could be held in Puerto Rico, some in the family have expressed a desire to see him buried in New York, where he spent much of his life.

Investing 101: Three Things to Look For When ... - Yahoo! Finance

There's no substitute for hands-on experience, particularly when it comes to investing. During the holiday season that means every one of the seemingly endless visits to stores and malls is another opportunity to come up with investment ideas to help pay for whatever it is you're buying.

This practice of shopping a company is just the first step in a stock picking process. Commonly referred to as "The Peter Lynch technique" in reference to Lynch's seminal "One Up on Wall Street" book, investing in what you know is one of the building blocks to successful money management.

Of course, you have to know what it is you're looking for when you shop. In the attached clip Brian Sozzi of NBG Productions runs through three specific qualities you probably want to see before rushing out to buy stock of the company from which you buy that sweater or toy.

1. Customer Service Slightly Better Than Expectations

The important point here is expectations. The way Walmart (WMT) treats its customer is different than the standard of care to be expected at Saks (SKS). A well-run company gives the customer what he or she should anticipate when they pull into the lot. At a discounter that means a clean store and a clerk at every register when the store is packed. At a high-end store exemplary service means "anything you want."

What a shopper should never feel is ignored, even if they're suspected of Showrooming. "Just because I have a smart phone doesn't mean I don't need attention," says Sozzi.

2. A lure to come back to the store

Just being good isn't enough. Sozzi says stores need to be actively courting shoppers to get them to come back and shop more. At discounters he likes to see layaway programs. While many consider layaway a sign of a lousy economy or customers that can't afford to pay full price, Sozzi sees a company bringing in repeat business.

One of Sozzi's favorite ploys is at the Gap (GPS) where the company gives out coupons and discount cards for future dates at the time of check-out.

3. A good match between the stores and the website

In a modern twist on Lynch, retailers today have to worry about the consistency between their online and offline experiences. A company firing on all cylinders will have the same prices, offerings and general "feel" on their website as they do at their stores.

A nice connection between the two is the aforementioned Gap, which connects shoppers to not just the Gap stores but also the corporation's Banana Republic and Old Navy divisions on their website.

As a caveat, don't make too much of your visit. A good in-store experience isn't a cue to run out and gobble up all the stock you can, but rater, is a starting point to the investment process.
