ALBANY, GA. --

Thousands of dollars were raised Friday night in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

All those who turned out to the ?Light the Night? event came for a reason, some affected directly by blood cancer and others who came in support of family.

?My grandfather was diagnosed with Leukemia and I?ve had several family members and friends that have had it,? said Anthony Johnson, musician.

For Johnson it was emotional experience, standing on stage and performing for others who are dealing with the same disease that his family is facing.

?There's strength in numbers to be able to find a cure. So that's why I?m here just to support them,? said Anthony Johnson.

The ?Light the night? ceremony was put on by the Southwest Georgia Homeschool Association's Key Club.

?Someone that would have been a future member of key club. that all of our families are close to, died of this horrible disease. So it's something that we want to support so that less people will have to go through that traumatic experience,? says Shelley Brooks, President of the Southwest Georgia Homeschool Association.

During the event, Shelley Brooks worked side by side with fellow students to? raise funds that may help save a life.

Those with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society say any effort put forth is worth every penny.

?We use the money to find better treatments for blood cancer and ultimately to find a cure. We're getting closer and closer to finding a cure for blood cancer and all of this money brings us that much closer to doing that,? said Stuart Windborne, with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

By the end of the night, the students raised several thousand dollars.
