Google invests in renewable energy in Texas

Google has invested $200 million in a wind farm in West Texas.

Google Inc. has dropped $200 million into the Spinning Spur Wind Project in the Texas Panhandle as part of the company?s strategic plan to invest in renewable energy.

The Spinning Spur wind farm generates power on behalf of utility Southwestern Public Service. EDF Renewable Energy built the project and remains co-owner and manager. The 161 megawatt wind farm, located about 35 miles from Amarillo, has enough electricity to power 60,000 homes.

Mountain View, Calif.-based Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) has made 11 renewable energy investments since 2012.

The Texas Panhandle is a major source of renewable energy in the state as the West Texas winds churn massive turbines. San Antonio?s CPS Energy also purchases a considerable portion of its renewable energy from wind farms in the Panhandle.
