Taliban offer adds urgency to Idaho POW rally

HAILEY, Idaho (AP) ? The tearful mother of the only known U.S. prisoner of war said Saturday she's feeling "very optimistic" about his eventual release after his Taliban captors offered last week to exchange him for prisoners at Guantanamo Bay.

U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl's mother, Jani Bergdahl, spoke to about 2,000 people gathered in Hailey, his hometown, in a city park where he played as a toddler and little boy.

About 400 in the crowd arrived astride motorcycles, adorned in leather and patches commemorating America's military missing in action.

Bowe Bergdahl, 27, was taken prisoner in Afghanistan on June 30, 2009. First Jani Bergdahl, then his father, Bob Bergdahl, who accompanied the motorcycle procession on his son's 1978 dirt bike, spoke for a combined 15 minutes about rejuvenated hopes that their son's now-four-year ordeal will soon come to a joyful close.

"We are feeling very optimistic this week," his mother, before addressing her son directly. "Bowe, we love you, we support you, and are eagerly awaiting your return home. I love you my son, as I have, from the first moment I heard of you, the never-ending, unconditional love a mother has for her child."

Buses also brought POW-MIA activists to the event from as far as Elko, Nev.

Though yellow ribbons on Main Street trees and "Bring Bowe Home" placards in Hailey shop windows are a constant reminder of the 27-year-old Bergdahl's captivity, organizers of the event said the Taliban offer has lent an addition element of urgency ? and hope ? to Saturday's gathering.

Many in the crowd said they were Vietnam veterans; some of them supported the proposed prisoner exchange without reservation.

"Give them their guys and get our guy home," said David Blunt, of Elko, Nev., who said he served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam as a medic. "Bring our guy home. He's suffered enough."

Bergdahl is believed held somewhere in Pakistan, but the Taliban said they would free him in exchange for five of their most senior operatives at Guantanamo Bay, the American installation on the southeastern tip of Cuba that's housed suspected terrorists following the Sept. 11 attacks.

The militant group's exchange proposition came just days ahead of possible talks between a U.S. delegation and Taliban members.

Bergdahl's father, Bob Bergdahl, urged those gathered at Hailey's Hop Porter Park to remember everyone, regardless of nationality, who had suffered during the 12-year conflict in Afghanistan that began following the Sept. 11 attacks.

He described his son as "part of the peace process."

"I wish she was the only mother that was suffering in that way," Bob Bergdahl said of his wife. "Mothers all over the world are suffering because of this war, and I don't forget that for even one day."

He addressed his son's captors in Pashto, the Afghan language he's learned since Bowe Bergdahl went missing.

Bob Bergdahl, who has grown a beard and wore all black at Saturday's event, said that while he is physically in Idaho, he's living vicariously through his son, having set his cell phone to Afghan time, in a bid to share as much as he can his son's experience in exile.

Both mother and father talked of Bergdahl as an adventurer, a young man who once helped crew a sailboat through the Panama Canal, disembarked in San Francisco and then rode a bicycle south along the Pacific Ocean to meet family in Santa Barbara, Calif., 350 miles away.

He joined the military at 22 because "he honestly thought he could help the people of Afghanistan," Bob Bergdahl said.

On June 6, the family said it received its first letter from their son in his handwriting in four years, ferried through the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The circumstances of his capture aren't completely clear, though U.S. officials on July 2, 2009, told The Associated Press a soldier had been taken after walking off his base following his duty shift. For some of the motorcycle riders who participated Saturday, those details are something to be sifted through later, after Bergdahl is safely in the arms of his family.

"He didn't go over there on his own," said Randy Danner, a former U.S. Air Force member from Mountain Home, who rode his motorbike to Hailey with a group called the Green Knights. "No matter the circumstances, for our men and women over there who have put themselves in harm's way, we have a duty to support them in any way we can."

BRYAN WASHINGTON: Finding A Few Minutes For Fitness

OPINION ? Since I was a child, I have been passionate about sports and fitness ? growing up in a house full of athletes will do that to you. Like most kids, I participated in team sports year-round at an early age. By the time I was in high school, I was playing something somewhere every week.

After high school I attended California State University, Sacramento, where I studied History and continued to participate in recreational sports and competitive intramural leagues. Upon graduation from college, there still remained a strong desire to be competitive, athletically.

While working behind a desk my first few years out of college, I accepted a job in sales from a big international gym. I quickly moved up the corporate ladder and broke plenty of company sales records, while earning a number of company awards.

However, there was still a void. I began to notice that the majority of the people I signed up for memberships were not reaching their fitness goals or quit coming to the gym altogether. This observation lead to the most significant development in my change of career. The transition into coaching has been more rewarding than I could have imagined.

Witnessing people reach their fitness goals, overcoming obstacles and accomplishing feats that seemed impossible to them, makes it easy to go to work every morning with one mind set. Build champions! In life and in sport.

Once a month, I will give you a challenging exercise routine that can be performed a few times a week or as a supplement to your current routine. I will also provide you with examples of some of the exercises, as well as detailed information on the muscle groups each exercise benefits. The majority of these exercises can be done at home and/or at your local gym. You can modify the difficulty of these exercises by adding weight or by adjusting your tempo.

This exercise program is designed for all levels of fitness. Whether you are a gym enthusiast, or just getting started on your health kick, this program will get you going in the right direction. Remember to stretch and warm up before performing any exercise program.

Once you have completed the routine, cool down with a short walk and finish with another series of stretches. Stay hydrated by taking periodic water breaks as needed.

Before exercising, consult your physician to make sure you are physically able to participate in a workout routine. Lastly, enjoy and have fun!

This program is designed to be performed as a circuit. One exercise immediately after the other. Rest as needed.

Exercise

• Jumping Jax: 30-60 reps
• Push Ups: 12 reps
• Running Man (not the dance): 40-60 reps

With this exercise you?re running in place with high knees.

Each alternating step represents one rep

• Deep Air Squats: 15-20 reps

With Deep Air Squats you?re attempting to get our butt below our knees.

Drive form the deep position through your heals back to the starting position.

With this exercise you?re lying down on our back, knees up, hands behind your head or across your chest, moving your legs in a motion similar to riding a bike.

• Rotating Planks 12-20 reps

With this exercise your starting position is in a push up position, move down to one elbow followed by the opposite elbow, leaving you in a plank position on both elbows. Reverse that movement to the starting position.

With this exercise your starting position is standing, next place your hand on the ground followed by your legs. At this point you should have your stomach on the ground with your arms in a bottom push position. Push off the ground using your arms, jump up to your feet into your starting position followed by a jump.

• Rock Climbers: 20-50 reps

With this exercise your starting position leaves you with both hands on the ground and one leg elongated back, and the opposite leg bent at a 90 degree angle with your foot on the outside of your hand. Alternate legs between the two positions.

Google's Waze acquisition catches FTC's investigative eyes

Google officially acquired the crowd-sourced mapping and traffic app Waze earlier this month, but the $1.1 billion deal is hitting a last-minute jam. The search giant has confirmed with Reuters that the Federal Trade Commission recently opened an antitrust investigation into the purchase, even though Waze will mostly operate independently. According to the New York Post, Google didn't file a review with the FTC because Waze makes less than $70 million annually, which is below the bar for an "automatic review." Reuters notes that the FTC can put a magnifying glass to any closed deals at its discretion, namely to ensure there was no prior intent simply to stifle competition. These latest happenings might make for a temporary roadblock between the integration of certain data between Waze and Maps, notes the Post -- assuming the deal indeed gets an okay from The Man. Either way, we'd imagine concessions will be made if needed, as Google's no a stranger to these types of proceedings.

Mozambique police arrest top Renamo general, bus attacked

By Marina Lopes (Reuters) - Suspected opposition Renamo guerrillas attacked a bus in central Mozambique on Friday, and police arrested a top Renamo general who threatened this week to 'paralyse' key transport routes in the southern African nation.

The bus shooting, in which an elderly woman was wounded, and the detention of Renamo information chief Jeronimo Malagueta is likely to inflame tensions between the former rebel movement and the ruling Frelimo party, its foe in a 1975-1992 civil war in which a million people died.

Interior Ministry spokesman Pedro Cossa said three shots were fired at the bus near Machanga in the central province of Sofala. State radio said special rapid-response police units had started patrolling the main north-south highway.

"I have no doubt that it was Renamo," Cossa said.

With a presidential election due in just over a year, Renamo has accused Frelimo of stacking the election commission to ensure another landslide victory for President Ernesto Guebuza.

On Wednesday, Malagueta, a Renamo brigadier-general, held a news conference to announce the group's plan to paralyse the only railway line out of Mozambique's vast coalfields. He was arrested in the early hours of Friday, Renamo and the government said.

The Sena rail line, connecting the northwest region of Tete to the Indian Ocean port of Beira, is used predominantly by Brazil's Vale and London-listed Rio Tinto.

The line runs close to Renamo's stronghold in the Gorongosa mountains and was frequently attacked in the civil war in which a million people died.

Even though Renamo is in no position to initiate a widespread guerrilla campaign, it is estimated to have 1,000 men under arms and analysts say it could cause enough trouble to upset a foreign mining investment boom.

At least 11 soldiers and police and three civilians have been killed in attacks since April, when Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama threatened to initiate a campaign of violence if Frelimo did not loosen its grip on politics and the economy.

Domestic dogs have been closely associated with humans for about 15,000 years. The animals are so well adapted to living with human beings that in many cases the owner replaces conspecifics and assumes the role of the dog's main social partner. The relationship between pet owners and dogs turns out to be highly similar to the deep connection between young children and their parents.

The importance of the owner to the dog

One aspect of the bond between humans and dogs is the so-called "secure base effect". This effect is also found in parent-child bonding: human infants use their caregivers as a secure base when it comes to interacting with the environment. Until recently the "secure base effect" had not been well examined in dogs. Lisa Horn from the Vetmeduni's Messerli Research Institute therefore decided to take a closer look at the behaviour of dogs and their owners. She examined the dogs' reactions under three different conditions: "absent owner", "silent owner" and "encouraging owner". The dogs could earn a food reward, by manipulating interactive dog toys. Surprisingly, they seemed much less keen on working for food, when their caregivers were not there than when they were. Whether an owner additionally encouraged the dog during the task or remained silent, had little influence on the animal's level of motivation.

When the owner is replaced by a stranger

In a follow-up experiment, Horn and her colleagues replaced the owner with an unfamiliar person. The scientists observed that dogs hardly interacted with the strangers and were not much more interested in trying to get the food reward than when this person was not there. The dogs were much more motivated only when their owner was present. The researchers concluded that the owner's presence is important for the animal to behave in a confident manner.

Why do adult dogs behave like human children?

The study provides the first evidence for the similarity between the "secure base effect" found in dog-owner and child-caregiver relationships. This striking parallel will be further investigated in direct comparative studies on dogs and children. As Horn says, "One of the things that really surprised us is, that adult dogs behave towards their caregivers like human children do. It will be really interesting to try to find out how this behaviour evolved in the dogs with direct comparisons."

MIAMI (AP) ? Five things of note from Miami's seven-game win over San Antonio in the NBA Finals, which ended Thursday night:

LEBRON'S MOMENT: LeBron James scored 37 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and added four assists, which for him now almost seems like an ordinary stat line. But even those big numbers didn't tell the whole story. After being accused of shrinking in the moment during the 2011 Finals, James more than made amends this time around. His jump shot with just under 30 seconds left capped the title, capped his second straight NBA Finals MVP award, capped a fourth quarter that he absolutely controlled, and maybe put to rest the notion that he tends to check out when the lights are brightest. Keep in mind, Dwyane Wade had 23 points, Shane Battier scored 18 and Mario Chalmers scored 14 ? but other than that, the entire Heat roster combined for three points. Chris Bosh didn't score. Ray Allen didn't score. And the Heat won. That's how good James was in Game 7.

SPOELSTRA'S CREDIT: Five franchises in the last 40 years have won back-to-back titles, and Erik Spoelstra is now the coach of one of them. He has been the mastermind of all things on the court for Miami for the past five seasons, three of which have ended with trips to the NBA Finals, the last two with championships. And if Spurs coach Gregg Popovich is considered one of the standards for "best in the game" today, then Spoelstra at least belongs in the conversation, since he matched Popovich move for move in this series. "And Erik is only going to get better," said Heat President Pat Riley, who has now been part of nine NBA championship clubs.

DEFENSE WINS: For five games, Danny Green couldn't miss, and San Antonio was on the cusp of a title. For two games in Miami, Green was swallowed up by a swarming Miami defense. In Games 6 and 7 of the NBA Finals, Green went 2 for 19 from the floor, 2 for 11 from 3-point range. And to think he was a strong candidate for Finals MVP after the Spurs took a 3-2 lead in the series. The Spurs made just six 3-pointers in Game 7 while Miami made 12, six from Shane Battier and five more from LeBron James. The Spurs shot just 38 percent as a team, and Miami needed its defense to be that good ? or else the title could have very easily slipped away.

THREE FOR THREE: Dwyane Wade's jersey number is 3. His favorite number is three. And it's now the number of NBA championships on his resume. Wade was bothered by a bad right knee throughout the playoffs, then hurt his surgically repaired left knee in Game 6 of the Finals, and still found a way to not just play, but play at a high level. He was 11 for 21 from the floor, scored 23 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, blocked two shots and logged 39 minutes, resting only when absolutely necessary.

THE FUTURE: Tim Duncan said he will be back in San Antonio, and now the Spurs will wait and see what Manu Ginobili decides about next season. The Heat are largely expected to bring their core back, though some moves to get even better are possible. "I don't even want to think about next year ? yet," James said. That's probably a good thing, and the Heat will surely spend a few days relaxing and celebrating until their parade through downtown Miami on Monday.
